The island of Castellorizo (Megisti)
The island owns its
ancient name (Megisti) to its founder Megisteas, whilst it became known as
Castelorizo during the Crusades (Castello Rosso, as a result of the red colored
boulders upon the castle was built). The island is about 9 sq. km and it's
population is about 275 people plus 400 tourists during the summer.
It has gone by several different names in its history,
including Castellorizo, Castelrosso (Italian), Meis (Turkish).
Kastelorizo lies only 3 km from the Anatolian
coast, close to the town Kas and it is the most eastern Greek island in the
Mediterranean Sea.
