Asklipion Village and the castle of the knights
Asklipion is situated, between Gennadi and
Lardos. It was named after the god of medicine. There is a fabulous eleventh.
century Byzantine church and an interesting museum. The church was built in
1060. It started as a cross, but extended later to accommodate a larger
congregation. In the museum, next to the church, are old bibles, religious
artifacts, agriculture tools, old olive press.
Above the village after approx.
10 min. walk you'll find the ruins of a medieval Crusader Castle. The entrance
is impressive, but inside, there is not much to see. From here you have an
excellent view over the countryside. The legend is, here once was a tunnel from
one of the houses to the castle, so that the villagers could gain refuge from
raiding pirates.
